The Mount Batur trek is rated moderate difficulty. The trail is approximately 4–5 km with an elevation gain of around 700 meters over loose volcanic scoria. Most healthy adults of average fitness can complete it. The ascent takes about 2 hours and the descent around 1.5 hours.
Hotel pick-up starts at 01:30 AM to arrive at the trailhead by 03:30 AM. We begin the hike at 04:00 AM in darkness to reach the 1717-meter summit for the sunrise, which typically occurs between 06:00–06:30 AM.
We provide flashlights and trekking poles. You should bring: warm clothing and a windproof jacket (it is cold at 4 AM!), hiking shoes with good grip, plenty of water, sunscreen for after sunrise, and a camera. Light snacks for energy on the ascent are also recommended.
